HyBont, a renewable energy company, has achieved a significant milestone in its proposed green hydrogen project in Bridgend, Wales. The company submitted a planning application to Bridgend County Borough Council, bringing it one step closer to realising its vision of creating a sustainable hydrogen economy in the region.
The project will be supported by Marubeni Europower's green hydrogen production and refuelling facility at Brynmenyn Industrial Estate, which will provide low carbon fuel to be used locally, in line with the council's Net Zero strategy. Additionally, HyBont's decarbonisation project team is exploring the possibility of a low carbon and cost-effective way to heat local schools and community facilities through an Ynysawdre heat network.

The company also plans to establish a solar farm at Bryncethin to generate a portion of the power needed for the project. These measures align with the UK government's Net Zero Hydrogen Fund (NZHF) and contribute to the government and council's aim of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
George Dodd, Senior Vice President at Marubeni Europower, said, “Green hydrogen has been identified as a key solution to decarbonise the energy system, and the HyBont project would contribute to the Council and Government's aims to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
The UK government's recent decision to restructure the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has renewed the country's push towards hydrogen. With many hydrogen projects in the pipeline, Wales is expected to play a vital role in the UK's drive towards establishing a hydrogen economy.

HyBont's proposed green hydrogen project is an excellent example of how the UK can transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy. The company's commitment to using renewable energy sources and partnering with local communities and businesses demonstrates how a collaborative approach can help achieve net-zero carbon emissions.
As the world works towards a sustainable future, HyBont's green hydrogen project in Bridgend could serve as a model for other regions looking to reduce their carbon footprint and establish a sustainable hydrogen economy.
