According to Morocco's Delegate-Minister of Investment, Convergence and the Evaluation of Public Policies, Mohcine Jazouli, Morocco has the potential to play a significant role in decarbonizing the European economy.
Speaking at the Davos 2023 conference in Switzerland, Jazouli highlighted Morocco's capacity for producing renewable solar and wind power, stating that it “will allow us to decarbonize the European economy.”
Morocco has been gaining international attention for its ambitious green energy production plans. In a report published in December 2022, Morocco was listed among the top three countries “punching above their weight” in developing green energy capacity. The country is currently home to the world's largest concentrated solar power plant and is making significant investments in wind energy and incentives for green energy investments.
Morocco has also committed to increasing the share of green energy in its mix to 70% by 2040 and 80% by 2050, one of the highest targets among its regional peers. The country's collaboration with Europe on green energy is already underway, with plans to export green electricity to the UK by 2030 through a submarine cable, which is expected to cover 8% of the UK's overall electricity needs.
