According to new plans published by energy network companies, Britain's gas grid is set to be ready to blend hydrogen around the country starting next year, providing more secure and domestically sourced energy supplies.
The Energy Networks Association (ENA) has released Britain's Hydrogen Blending Delivery Plan, outlining how all five of Britain's gas grid companies will meet the government's goal of having the country's gas pipes ready to deliver 20% hydrogen to homes and businesses by 2023.
This will serve as a replacement for up to 20% of the natural gas currently used, and will also allow Britain's fleet of gas-fired power plants to generate cleaner electricity using blended hydrogen.
The companies are also calling for the government to double its 2030 domestic hydrogen production target from 5 GW to 10 GW in order to produce more hydrogen from sources within the UK, and to better protect homes and businesses from changes in the international gas market.
