GE Gas Power and IHI Partner to Develop Ammonia Combustion Technologies for Carbon-Free Electricity Generation

In a move to reduce carbon emissions, has partnered with Japanese engineering firm to develop combustion technologies for use in gas turbines to generate .

The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to outline a roadmap for the development of gas turbine technologies by the end of the decade.

The partnership builds on an MOU signed in June 2021, in which the companies agreed to assess the economic feasibility of using ammonia as a carbon-free fuel for existing and new gas turbines.

The focus will be on GE's 6F.03, 7F, and 9F gas turbines, with the goal of operating them safely using 100% ammonia. Additionally, the companies will explore the potential for using this technology in more gas turbines in the future.

GE Vernova CEO Scott Strazik stated that this collaboration will pave the way for power plant operators to adopt carbon-free fuels, such as ammonia, for power generation in their GE gas turbines, significantly contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions globally.
