SP Energy Networks Launches Spring Flexibility Tender for Distribution Network License Areas

, the distribution utility company, has recently launched its spring Flexibility Tender, calling for providers to supply flexibility services across 571 locations within its distribution network licence areas. The company aims to procure 273MW of flexibility for an 18-month period from November 2023 to October 2025. The pre-qualification period is currently open and will run until July 14, 2023, followed by the bidding competition which will open on July 17 and close on July 21, 2023.

The , a marketplace for the procurement of flexibility services, will be used for the application process. The tender will allow for additional flexibility to meet demand for electricity resulting from the adoption of low carbon technologies. It will help defer the need for traditional network reinforcement, thus benefiting customers with a more reliable network and opportunities created by a smarter grid.

SP Energy Networks has already accepted bids for over 600MW to meet its RIIO-ED2 flexibility requirements and is continuing to lead the way towards a more flexible network. The company aims to target new locations through this latest tender, and play a crucial role in supporting the to meet its net zero emissions target by facilitating the introduction of greener energy solutions.

Commenting on the tender, Head of Flexibility at SP Energy Networks, , said: “We have identified areas where demand for electricity is likely to be higher than the existing capacity of local substations. Within these areas, we are tendering for flexibility to ensure our network continues to be as resilient as possible as more and more customers make the transition to low carbon technologies. We're excited to continue to drive the nation towards a more flexible network and look forward to receiving offers from flexibility providers who can play a part in shaping our network and the country's transition to a cleaner, greener future.”

Flexibility providers can register their assets on the Piclo platform to automatically qualify for and bid into the flexibility auctions. The launch of this tender will create more opportunities for flexibility providers, and help the UK move towards a greener future.
