Global workwear textile manufacturer Carrington Textiles, in collaboration with its joint venture in Portugal, MGC, has announced significant carbon emission reductions following the implementation of a biomass boiler at its facility last year.
The initiative has enabled the factory to fulfill 95% of its steam requirements for manufacturing operations while reducing natural gas consumption by 70%, marking a substantial stride towards sustainable textile production practices.
MGC's biomass boiler utilizes responsibly sourced wood chips sourced from local forests within a 50 km radius of the factory, all certified by SURE (Sustainable Resources). This raw material, consisting of leftover wood intended for the paper industry, helps mitigate fire hazards by being utilized in the biomass boiler.
Furthermore, the ash produced during the process is repurposed as soil fertilizer after undergoing treatment to prevent soil contamination, ensuring a closed-loop approach to waste management.
The adoption of this new equipment has rendered the textile manufacturer's operations carbon neutral, resulting in a notable 45% reduction in overall CO2 emissions compared to 2022.
Jose Melo, Managing Director of MGC, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “The installation of the biomass boiler marks a significant milestone in our journey towards driving energy efficiency in our manufacturing processes. The substantial reduction in our CO2 emissions is a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship.”
