Denmark-based Northern Offshore Services (N-O-S) has taken a major step towards meeting the offshore wind industry's need for more sustainable solutions by ordering two next-generation crew transfer vessels (CTVs) to be delivered in 2024. The I-Class vessels, which will form a new category of N-O-S-designed CTVs, will feature cutting-edge green technology solutions, making them capable of operating in hybrid or fully electrical mode when performing transit and docking.
According to N-O-S, the vessels' innovative green technology solutions are flexible enough to meet future demands, and they will be equipped with the latest low-emission engine technology. The I-Class vessels will be capable of accommodating up to 32 people, with a forward deck area of 131 square metres and an aft deck area of 40 square metres.
In addition to the I-Class vessels, N-O-S has signed a five-year charter with Vestas to explore the potential of the world's first methanol-powered CTV in reducing carbon emissions from its offshore service operations. The CTV, developed by N-O-S, will be powered by a dual-fuel solution, with the ability to use methanol or marine gas oil, depending on availability.
N-O-S operates approximately 45 vessels, including CTVs, smaller tankers, and other supply vessels. By investing in sustainable solutions, such as the I-Class vessels and the methanol-powered CTV, N-O-S is demonstrating its commitment to meeting the offshore wind industry's high demand for future sustainability. As the offshore wind industry continues to grow and evolve, N-O-S will undoubtedly continue to be a key player in shaping its future.
