SSE has announced its final investment decision to proceed with the construction of the Aberarder , a 50MW project nestled in the scenic Scottish Highlands. With an estimated investment of around £100 million, the initiative marks a substantial commitment by to expand its footprint.

The Aberarder wind farm, comprising 12 turbines, is slated to commence construction before the year's end, with completion expected by the end of 2026. Securing a 15-year contract for low-carbon power generation in the 's fifth Contract for Difference (CfD) Allocation round in September 2023, the project underscores SSE's dedication to sustainable energy initiatives.

Strategically located at Strathnairn near Inverness, atop a natural plateau approximately 700 meters above sea level, Aberarder enjoys proximity to the operational Dunmaglass wind farm, jointly owned by SSE Renewables and Greencoat UK Wind. SSE Renewables acquired the fully consented Aberarder project in October 2022, paving the way for its development.

Upon completion, Aberarder is projected to generate enough clean energy to power around 60,000 homes annually, while offsetting over 35,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions each year. Heather Donald, Director of Onshore Development and Construction at SSE Renewables, emphasized the pivotal role of onshore wind in driving the transition to net zero emissions, stating, “Onshore wind is a critical component of the net zero transition.”

Aberarder's commissioning will contribute significantly to SSE plc's Net Zero Acceleration Programme Plus (NZAP Plus), a comprehensive five-year investment plan aimed at bolstering low-carbon energy . With an ambitious investment target of around £20.5 billion, the plan underscores SSE's commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

As part of the Aberarder project, SSE Renewables, in collaboration with The Highland Council, will undertake £2.5 million worth of improvement works on the nearby Flichity Bridge. Additionally, substantial contributions will be made to local communities through the establishment of a multi-million-pound Community Benefit Fund, ensuring equitable distribution of benefits derived from the wind farm's operations.

The Aberarder wind farm represents a significant stride towards achieving Scotland and the UK's net zero targets, while simultaneously fostering economic growth and community development in the region.
