Yara Clean Ammonia, a subsidiary of Norwegian fertilizer company Yara International ASA, has inked a term sheet agreement to procure renewable ammonia for its global market from a project based in India.
Under the preliminary deal, Yara Clean Ammonia will collaborate with Greenko ZeroC, the green ammonia production arm of India's AM Green, to secure the long-term supply of up to 50% of renewable ammonia from the initial phase of AM Green's ammonia plant in Kakinada, located in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The facility is slated to commence production and export of green ammonia by 2027.
Hans Olav Raen, Chief Executive of Yara Clean Ammonia, commented on the agreement, stating, “The AM Green Kakinada project expands our portfolio of ammonia produced with renewable energy and consolidates Yara Clean Ammonia's position as a reliable supplier of low-emission ammonia to established and emerging markets like fertilizer production, cracking of clean ammonia to hydrogen, shipping fuel, power generation, and other industrial applications.”
AM Green is spearheading the development of a green ammonia platform with an anticipated total production capacity of 5 million tonnes per year by 2030. The company has also established a joint venture with John Cockerill for the production of electrolysers, further enhancing its capabilities in the renewable energy sector.
Additionally, German energy company Uniper SE is exploring opportunities to source ammonia from the Kakinada site, highlighting the growing interest and demand for sustainable ammonia production in the global market.
