RWE Advances 200MW Green Hydrogen Project to Bolster Scotland’s Decarbonization Efforts

has completed comprehensive studies for a 200MW project at Grangemouth in the , signaling a significant milestone in 's decarbonization journey. The project, which aligns with Scotland's ambitious sustainability goals, aims to produce green hydrogen to support various industries' efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The development process for the project has included concept, feasibility, and pre-front-end engineering design (FEED) studies, demonstrating RWE's commitment to ensuring the project's viability and success. With a secured grid connection in place, RWE is now in the process of shortlisting electrolyser suppliers, paving the way for the next phase of development.

The company's next steps involve progressing towards a planning application, which will include local consultation to gather community input and feedback. RWE aims to bring the project into operation by 2029, contributing to Scotland's transition towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy landscape.

Upon completion, the 200MW green hydrogen project will have the capacity to produce up to 3.6 tonnes of hydrogen per hour, with potential expansion plans to increase capacity to 600MW at a later date. The project will be situated within the Grangemouth industrial complex, strategically located adjacent to the INEOS facility, which will be the primary recipient of the produced hydrogen.

, Chief Operating Officer Hydrogen at RWE Generation, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “This is a significant step towards RWE's ambitions for the production of green hydrogen in Scotland.” Sury emphasized the project's alignment with the Scottish Government's vision for a ‘Just Transition,' emphasizing Scotland's role in leading the green revolution while supporting job protection and decarbonization efforts in Grangemouth.

Colin Pritchard, Sustainability Director at the INEOS Grangemouth site, voiced support for RWE's green hydrogen initiative, highlighting its synergies with INEOS's own low-carbon hydrogen production unit project. Pritchard emphasized the importance of these projects in advancing INEOS's net zero roadmap and positioning Grangemouth as a key player in Scotland's future hydrogen economy.
