Neoen, a player in renewable energy, has secured a significant contract to develop a 400MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Canada. The contract, awarded through a competitive tender initiated by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), Ontario's electric grid operator, underscores Neoen's commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
Known as Grey Owl Storage, the project will provide the IESO with additional capacity for 20 years, contributing to Ontario's efforts to meet its growing energy needs. The BESS will play a crucial role in optimizing energy distribution by charging during off-peak hours and redistributing stored energy back into the grid during peak times, ensuring reliability and efficiency.
Located near the town of Arran-Elderslie in Bruce County, Grey Owl Storage boasts a total capacity of 400MW/1600MWh and is expected to become operational by early 2028. Neoen, through its subsidiary Shift Solar, will assume the role of long-term owner and operator of the battery, aligning with its business model of sustainable energy development and management.
Emmanuel Pujol, Chief Executive of Neoen Americas, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “We are thrilled to have been awarded this major contract with the IESO.” Pujol emphasized Neoen's commitment to contributing to Ontario's energy landscape, highlighting the company's ambition to develop a diverse portfolio of renewable energy and storage projects in the region.
