German energy group RWE AG announced on Monday the initiation of construction works on an 8.3-MWac solar photovoltaic project in Italy, marking a significant step forward in the company's renewable energy endeavors.
Dubbed Bosco, the ground-mounted solar farm will occupy a 16-hectare (39.5 acres) site in the municipality of Partinico near Palermo, Sicily. RWE plans to deploy approximately 15,000 bifacial solar panels to assemble the Bosco plant, with the aim of commissioning the solar farm by the end of the year.
According to Katja Wuenschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, Bosco represents RWE's inaugural solar project under construction in Italy. The project has benefited from Italy's new accelerated permitting process, facilitating RWE's attainment of ready-to-build status in less than 18 months.
RWE's presence in Italy extends beyond solar, with the company currently operating 15 onshore wind farms totaling approximately 500 MW. Bolstering this portfolio, RWE is advancing two ongoing wind projects in the Apulia region. The 54-MW San Severo project is presently under construction and will soon be joined by the 54-MW Mondonuovo project, underscoring RWE's commitment to renewable energy expansion in Italy.
