The Philippines is set to make significant strides in renewable energy infrastructure this year, with plans to activate nearly 2 GW of solar power generation and over 590 MW of battery energy storage, according to an announcement from the Department of Energy (DOE) last week.
The government aims to bring online at least 4,165 MW of power projects in 2024, comprising a blend of renewable and conventional sources. Among these, the commercial operation of 1,985 MW of solar capacities is anticipated, with approximately 495 MW already undergoing testing and commissioning. An additional 966.3 MW of solar capacity is slated to come online by June.
Furthermore, the DOE outlined plans for the completion of 590 MW of battery energy storage installations this year, with 32.42 MW of capacity already operational.
“These additions will bolster the reliability and stability of the grid, mitigating supply deficiencies and reducing the risk of potential power interruptions,” emphasized Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla.
Lotilla urged local government units (LGUs) and other relevant government agencies to engage proactively with energy project developers, streamline the permitting process, and address right-of-way issues promptly to facilitate the seamless implementation of energy projects across the country.
