In a landmark development for Zambia's renewable energy landscape, SkyPower Global, a leading developer, and Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) have inked a monumental 1-gigawatt Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) aimed at bolstering the nation's renewable energy capacity.
The signing of this significant agreement represents a crucial milestone in Zambia's Integrated Renewable Energy Plan, a strategic initiative designed to propel the nation towards sustainable growth and energy security, according to SkyPower.
Addressing the importance of the deal, President Hakainde Hichilema emphasized, “The Green Giant Zambia project is a crucial component of our Integrated Renewable Energy Plan, especially in the context of our current drought owing to climate change.” He highlighted the project's role in meeting Zambia's energy needs and supporting industrial productivity, particularly in the crucial copper production sector.
During the ceremony marking the agreement, SkyPower country manager and special advisor Michael Prest shared insights, stating, “The Green Giant Zambia initiative is a monumental step towards a sustainable future.” Prest emphasized the transformative potential of leveraging advanced solar technology to reshape Zambia's energy landscape on a global scale.
Echoing this sentiment, ZESCO managing director Engineer Victor Benjamin Mapani affirmed, “This agreement with SkyPower Global is a testament to ZESCO's commitment to transforming Zambia into a hub for renewable energy in Africa.” Mapani underscored the project's significance in enhancing energy security and sustainability while strengthening the national grid with clean, renewable power.
SkyPower Global founder, president, and chief executive Kerry Adler expressed his vision for the project, stating, “With Green Giant Zambia, we are not just producing renewable energy; in line with President Hichilema's vision and goals for Zambia.” He emphasized the broader impact of the initiative, including job creation and infrastructure development, aligning with Zambia's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The Green Giant Zambia project is poised to deliver electricity to approximately 4 million households, driving significant socioeconomic benefits through job creation and infrastructure development. This ambitious endeavor solidifies Zambia's position as a regional leader in renewable energy, marking a pivotal step towards a sustainable and prosperous future.
