Sonnedix has commenced the construction of a significant solar project in the United Kingdom. The Cowley Complex, situated in County Durham in north-east England, stands as the flagship installation within Sonnedix's expansive 300MW UK portfolio.
Expected to be operational by the second half of 2025, the Cowley Complex comprises three interconnected sites with capacities of 60MW, 43MW, and 17MW respectively. This ambitious venture, undertaken by EPC contractor Ameresco Sunel Energy, not only advances the UK's renewable energy agenda but also contributes to the local economy by generating over 100 green jobs in the region.
The initiation of this project marks a pivotal moment for Sonnedix, as it represents the first utilization of the company's €500 million loan facility secured in December 2023. This financing mechanism enables Sonnedix to streamline the development, contracting, and construction processes across its renewable energy projects in Europe and the UK, fostering greater efficiency and flexibility.
Moreover, Sonnedix's entire UK portfolio enjoys the security provided by the UK Government's Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, ensuring long-term price stability and revenue security. Upon the completion of the Cowley Complex, slated for 2026, this scheme will come into effect, further solidifying Sonnedix's position in the UK's renewable energy landscape.
Axel Thiemann, CEO of Sonnedix, expressed enthusiasm for the company's growth trajectory in the UK, stating, “With construction of the largest plant in our UK portfolio underway, we have marked a major milestone in our UK growth strategy. We are excited to be progressing our presence in the market and becoming a key player in helping the UK transition towards a clean, secure, and sustainable energy system and meeting its decarbonization goals.”
Jorge Amiano Goyarrola, Global Head of Engineering and Construction at Sonnedix, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the significance of the Cowley site as a crucial infrastructure project for the local community. He stated, “At 120MW, this is an important infrastructure project for the local area, providing over 100 green jobs during construction and the secure supply of green, affordable energy once operational. We're very proud to be working on what is set to be one of the largest solar PV plants across the whole of the UK once completed.”
