Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, a joint venture between Plenitude (Eni) and HitecVision, have announced that their 560MW floating offshore wind project, Green Volt, has been granted offshore planning approval. This approval follows the recent announcement of onshore consent earlier this month, positioning Green Volt as Europe's first commercial-scale offshore wind farm, with all planning approvals secured.
The Green Volt project is set to feature up to 35 floating wind turbines and is part of Crown Estate Scotland's Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) leasing round. It aims to deliver renewable electricity to oil and gas platforms, replacing existing natural gas and diesel power generation while also contributing electricity to the UK grid. The project is anticipated to reduce carbon emissions by 1 million tonnes annually.
With a 50% ownership split between Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, the project signifies a significant advancement in the offshore wind sector. First Minister of Scotland, Humza Yousaf, hailed the project as a milestone in Scotland's commitment to renewable energy and its position as a leader in floating wind technology.
Nicol Stephen, CEO of Flotation Energy, expressed excitement over the project's approval, highlighting its importance in the energy transition and the creation of local jobs. He credited the swift approval process to the dedication of the Green Volt team, the Scottish Government, and key agencies.
Olav Hetland, CEO of Vårgrønn, emphasized the significance of Green Volt as Europe's first commercial-scale floating wind project. He noted its role in advancing technology and supporting the growth of the offshore wind supply chain.
The approval of the Green Volt project marks a significant milestone in the offshore wind industry, positioning Scotland as a leader in floating wind technology and paving the way for future developments in renewable energy.
