Uriel Renovables has achieved a milestone in sustainable energy development with the completion of the first megawatt of its photovoltaic solar installation at the Montemarta Cónica Comprehensive Urban Solid Waste Treatment Center in Alcalá de Guadaira, Seville. This pioneering project, spearheaded by subsidiary Energía Sur de Europa, signifies a groundbreaking venture in Spain by integrating biogas and photovoltaic technologies, thus unlocking new avenues for renewable energy generation.
With an investment of three million euros, the project marks the inaugural instance of hybridizing biogas and photovoltaic technologies in Andalusia. The utilization of photovoltaic modules in closed disposal vessels optimizes network capacity and valorizes previously unused land dedicated to waste disposal, thereby closing the sustainability loop.
Arturo Caraballo, Managing Director of Energía Sur de Europa, commented on the significance of this innovative endeavor, stating, “This project constitutes a special challenge for us as it is the first experience in which we combine landfill biogas technology with photovoltaic solar. We are sure that this concept of hybridization will have a huge impact not only in our company, but in the entire sector.”
The photovoltaic installation, set to achieve a total power of three megawatts, anticipates the operationalization of the remaining two megawatts by the upcoming autumn. The initial phase is projected to generate an annual electrical energy output of 2,050 MWh, a figure that will escalate to 6,365 MWh upon completion of the second phase, currently underway.
Uriel Renovables boasts a rich legacy in green energy development, having contributed over 600 MW in its more than three-decade history. The company's diversified portfolio encompasses various technologies including solar, wind, hydraulic, biogas, and batteries, spanning across Europe, the United States, and Latin America.
