Iberdrola SA, the Spanish utility giant, has announced the appointment of Katya Somohano Silva as the new CEO of Iberdrola Mexico, marking a pivotal transition as the company embarks on a “new phase” following a significant asset sale to the Mexican state.
Somohano, a native of Mexico City, steps into her new role succeeding Enrique Alba, who has served with Iberdrola Mexico for a decade. Alba will be returning to Spain to assume an unspecified “position of responsibility” within the Iberdrola Group, the utility disclosed on Friday.
The CEO transition comes on the heels of Iberdrola's completion of a major asset sale, wherein it divested 12 combined-cycle gas plants and a wind farm in Mexico to a trust, partially financed by the Mexican government's National Infrastructure Fund (Fonadin). This transaction heralds the dawn of a “New Iberdrola Mexico,” with a renewed focus on decarbonization and the development of wind and solar projects, the Spanish power firm emphasized.
Commenting on her appointment, Somohano articulated the company's vision for the future, stating, “Iberdrola Mexico begins a new phase in the country with the aim of supporting the industry in its decarbonization and emissions reduction goals. We want to grow hand in hand with our customers and suppliers, supporting national content, the creation of quality jobs, and win-win in the communities where we have a presence.”
She further emphasized the commitment to operational excellence and outlined the company's renewable growth plan, reaffirming the dedication to Mexico's sustainable and green future. “By maintaining our operational excellence, we will execute the company's renewable growth plan. We reaffirm our commitment to Mexico and to the goal of building, together, a more sustainable and green future,” Somohano added.
