GreenGo Secures Authorization for Energy Storage Plant in Italy

has received the first authorization for the construction of an electrochemical plant (BESS) in Calabria, .

The 49.5MW Cuvelli plant in Scandale is poised to play a critical role in maintaining the balance between energy production and consumption on the Italian electricity grid, according to GreenGo.

Located near Terna's new 380/150kV RTN station, the plant will be instrumental in integrating renewable energies and stabilizing the grid through frequency regulation and the provision of reserve capacity.

The authorization for the Scandale site, granted 17 months after the application in November 2022, signifies a significant step for GreenGo in the MACSE (Forward Storage Market). The auction for MACSE is expected to take place at the end of March 2025, and it aims to encourage the installation and management of storage systems in Italy.

GreenGo believes that MACSE will be crucial to Italy's energy transition, enabling more efficient energy management from renewable sources and ensuring an effective response to fluctuations in non-programmable energy production.

Fabio Amico, GreenGo's business development director, commented on the authorization, stating, “The Autorizzazione Unica for the BESS plant in Scandale is a significant milestone for GreenGo. This project not only strengthens our position in the Italian energy market with a pipeline of 400MW but also actively contributes to the diversification of our technology portfolio.”

Amico added, “This is just the beginning, as we foresee further internal developments and potential acquisitions of initiatives in the field of innovative technologies that have concrete possibilities of realization within 12/24 months to strengthen our IPP strategy.”
