SSE Renewables has announced the successful commissioning of its first battery energy storage system (BESS) project at Salisbury in Wiltshire, England. The 50MW/100MWh storage project, now fully operational, is capable of powering over 80,000 homes for two hours during peak demand periods, making it a significant addition to SSE's portfolio.
The asset is now actively participating in Britain's wholesale energy market following the completion of final energization tests last week. According to SSE Renewables, battery storage plays a crucial role in facilitating the transition to net zero due to its ability to store and release energy when needed most.
The official inauguration of the Salisbury BESS was marked by John Glen, Member of Parliament for Salisbury and Minister for the Cabinet Office, who highlighted the site's importance in ensuring reliable energy supply from renewable sources as the UK progresses towards its net-zero goal.
Construction of the 26-battery unit project began in 2022 on a site adjacent to the old Quidhampton Quarry in Salisbury, in collaboration with project partners, technology group Wärtsilä. The BESS can store up to 100MWh of energy for flexible dispatch to the National Grid, providing up to two hours of operation during peak demand periods.
“I am delighted to formally open Salisbury's battery storage site,” said John Glen. “SSE Renewables have installed 26 batteries on this site and they are now fully operational. This welcome investment means supply of energy from renewable sources is reliable. Salisbury is leading the way as we continue our journey to net zero.”
The Salisbury BESS represents a flagship operational battery site for SSE Renewables, contributing significantly to the company's Net Zero Acceleration Programme. This fully funded five-year investment plan, totaling over £7 billion by 2027, aims to deliver low-carbon infrastructure supporting the transition to net zero, including new battery storage technology.
Richard Cave-Bigley, Director of Development and Construction – Solar & Battery at SSE Renewables, expressed pride in the completion of the Salisbury project, emphasizing its importance in the company's operational portfolio. He praised the project team and thanked project partners Wärtsilä for their efforts in bringing the project to fruition.
In addition to the Salisbury site, SSE Renewables is also progressing with the construction of a 150MW battery project in Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire, scheduled for completion in the first half of next year, and a 320MW battery project in Monk Fryston, North Yorkshire.
