Graham Stuart, the UK's Energy Minister, has announced his resignation from the position. He will be succeeded by Justin Tomlinson, a former minister and deputy chairman of the Conservative Party.
During his tenure, Stuart highlighted achievements such as the significant reduction in emissions and the upcoming closure of the country's last coal-fired power plant later this year.
“I was delighted to establish and chair the Net Zero Council, the Solar Taskforce, and the Green Jobs Delivery Group as we continue our partnership with business to reach net zero in a way which strengthens our economy and protects households,” Stuart said in his resignation letter.
He praised the officials at the Department of Energy (DESNZ), calling them “among the finest in the civil service” and commending their efforts to ensure energy security and decarbonization.
Stuart expressed his intention to focus on his constituency of Beverley & Holderness after serving for the majority of the last eight years as a minister. He also pledged to support the government of Rishi Sunak from the back benches.
Justin Tomlinson will now take on the role of Energy Minister, stepping into the position at a critical time as the UK continues its efforts to transition to a greener, more sustainable energy future.
