German company CMBlu Energy AG has secured an order from Mercedes-Benz Group AG for an 11-MWh Organic SolidFlow battery, which will be installed at Mercedes-Benz's Rastatt plant in Germany. The battery will support Mercedes-Benz's increased use of renewable energy, including storing electricity from the plant's solar installations and discharging it over many hours.
Mercedes-Benz is investing a single-digit euro amount in the project, which is expected to be realized in the second half of 2025. This order marks a significant step for CMBlu Energy as it transitions from a research entity to a cleantech company with serial production starting in the third quarter of 2024.
According to Joerg Burzer of Mercedes-Benz, integrating energy storage systems into production centers powered by renewable energy is crucial. CMBlu Energy's founder, Peter Geigle, emphasized the importance of their SolidFlow battery systems for buffering and integrating increasing amounts of renewable energy into European power grids. Geigle highlighted that CMBlu's battery designs rely on natural and infinitely available resources.
Geigle also noted that while metal batteries are essential for expanding electric mobility, there is no competition between different battery technologies, but rather a reasonable coexistence.
