US utility Duke Energy Corp (DUK) has filed for regulatory approval to construct a 76-megawatt (MW) solar park near an existing nuclear power station in South Carolina.
The project, proposed by Duke Energy Progress, will undergo review by the Public Service Commission of South Carolina (PSCSC), the utility announced on Friday.
The planned photovoltaic (PV) farm is slated to be built on a site of approximately 345 acres (140 hectares) adjacent to the Robinson nuclear plant in Chesterfield and Darlington counties. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with full commissioning expected in the following year. The electricity generated by the solar park will be used to meet the power needs of the Pee Dee region of South Carolina.
Duke Energy intends to continue operating the Robinson nuclear station and plans to submit an application for the renewal of its license to operate the site in 2025.
