German energy major RWE AG has acquired a land option in Teesside, North East England, for the development of an up to 260-megawatt electrolyser to produce green hydrogen.
The site, located at the Wilton International industrial zone, is envisioned to serve as a hub for generating up to five tonnes of green hydrogen per hour, RWE announced.
The secured development land is strategically located near industrial energy users and planned hydrogen pipelines. RWE has conducted feasibility and initial environmental studies for the project and aims to commission the proposed facility by 2028. The company is currently in discussions with potential industrial customers to secure off-take agreements for the hydrogen.
As the largest power producer in the UK, accounting for 15% of the country's renewable energy output, RWE is committed to expanding its presence in the hydrogen market. The company plans to install 2 gigawatts of electrolysers in its core markets by 2030, with approximately 1 gigawatt of hydrogen projects currently under development across the UK.
