German energy group RWE AG has entered into an agreement with Nordex SE to procure wind turbines with a total capacity of 800 MW over the next two and a half years, marking a significant step in RWE's ambitious expansion plans in the onshore wind sector.
Under the multi-year contract announced on Thursday, Nordex will supply approximately 120 turbines for RWE projects in Europe. The N163 model, with a flexible rated output of up to 6.8 MW, will be the primary choice, alongside the N175 and N149 models.
The partnership also includes a multi-year service deal covering the maintenance and servicing of the onshore wind farms.
Katja Wuenschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, highlighted the strategic significance of the agreement, stating, “We have announced that we will accelerate our expansion even further: By 2030, we want to increase our installed capacity in the onshore wind sector from the current 8.6 GW to 14 GW. To strengthen our supply chain, we are planning for the long term and relying on strong partners. This supply agreement with Nordex optimally complements existing contracts and secures additional capacity for us to achieve our ambitious growth targets.”
RWE emphasized that it already operates 53 wind farms featuring Nordex hardware in seven countries, underscoring the longstanding relationship between the two companies and the reliability of Nordex's technology in RWE's renewable energy portfolio.
