Norway Approves Five Applicants for Sorlige Nordsjo 2 Offshore Wind Auction

has greenlit five applicants for its highly anticipated Sorlige Nordsjo 2 offshore wind auction, marking a significant milestone in the country's ambitions. Minister of Energy Terje Aasland confirmed the approval, expressing optimism about the upcoming competition.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Energy received a total of seven applications, with five successfully meeting the rigorous criteria set forth. Among the qualified contenders are notable industry players, including consortia such as Aker Offshore Wind, BP, and , as well as and RWE. Other participants include Norseman Wind, a subsidiary of EnBW, and a partnership comprising Shell, Lyse, and Eviny. Notably absent from the list are Hydroelectric Corporation and China's , which did not meet the necessary requirements.

Applicants were evaluated based on their sustainability credentials and potential positive economic impacts, in addition to demonstrating robust implementation capabilities. The auction mechanism will involve qualified players vying for state support by submitting progressively lower bids until a final winner emerges, with bids assessed in øre/kWh.

This auction represents the inaugural competition for offshore wind project areas on the Norwegian continental shelf, underscoring the country's commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio. With the stage set for spirited competition among qualified participants, all eyes are on the forthcoming auction, slated to commence on March 18th.
