New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) granted approval on Thursday for Con Edison's $1.2 billion clean city project in Queens.
The Idlewild project holds strategic importance in the state's ambitious goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 85% of 1990 levels by 2050, according to the PSC's official statement.
The Clean City Project, as termed by Con Edison, is deemed crucial for maintaining the reliability of the electrical system while serving as points of interconnection for both energy storage and future clean energy initiatives.
Additionally, the project aims to address potential reliability concerns arising from the anticipated growth in energy demand, as outlined by the PSC.
Commission Chair Rory M. Christian expressed optimism about the decision, stating, “With today's decision, Con Edison will be making infrastructure investments that are designed to promote the transition to a clean-energy economy while ensuring the reliability of the electric grid overall.”
