The Low Impact Hydropower Institute (LIHI) has concluded its mid-term recertification process for the Red Bridge, Putts Bridge, Indian Orchard, and Dwight hydroelectric projects on the Chicopee River in Massachusetts. All four projects, owned by Central Rivers Power MA, LLC (a subsidiary of LS Power/Patriot Hydro, LLC), have received favorable assessments.
The Chicopee River, with its 18-mile length and expansive 721-square-mile watershed, has historically been sought after for hydropower, particularly during the Industrial Revolution, due to its 260-foot drop over its course. The LIHI certification process evaluates hydropower projects based on environmental, recreational, and cultural impacts.
Red Bridge (LIHI #96) is a run-of-river facility with 4.5 MW capacity and an average annual generation of 12,715 MWh. Putts Bridge (LIHI #102) is a run-of-river facility with 3.9 MW capacity and an average annual generation of 13,713 MWh. Indian Orchard (LIHI #112) is a run-of-river facility with 3.7 MW capacity and an average annual generation of 12,700 MWh. Dwight (LIHI #170) is a run-of-river facility with 1.464 MW capacity and an average annual generation of 3,493 MWh.
The LIHI certification ensures that these hydroelectric projects adhere to established environmental criteria, considering their impacts on aquatic ecosystems. LS Power, as the project owner, will benefit from the positive mid-term recertifications, reflecting a commitment to environmentally sound and sustainable hydropower practices.
The certification term for each project varies, ranging from March 2023 to April 2033, with the option for extension in the case of Indian Orchard. LIHI Certified facilities, which constitute 11% of FERC-licensed and FERC-exempt facilities, play a significant role in providing clean energy and avoiding carbon dioxide emissions.
