Brazil's state-owned oil and gas company, Petrobras, has inked a strategic agreement with Honeywell UOP to incorporate Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) technology in its maiden biorefining plant.
The Presidente Bernardes Refinery (RPBC), located in Cubatao municipality, Sao Paulo state, is slated to be the first facility to adopt this technology for the production of aviation biokerosene and 100% renewable diesel.
The HEFA unit at the refinery is designed to process 2,700 cubic meters of vegetable oils and animal fats daily, with a specific focus on soybean oil and beef tallow as feedstocks.
This initiative aligns with Petrobras' broader BioRefining Programme, outlining investments of USD 1.5 billion in refinery enhancements to foster the development of more sustainable and modern fuels.
As part of Petrobras' commitment to energy transition and low-carbon initiatives, the company plans an overall investment of USD 11.5 billion. The collaboration with Honeywell UOP marks a significant step in Petrobras' efforts to integrate renewable and eco-friendly practices into its operations.
