Brazil witnessed a substantial increase in its power generation capacity in 2023, connecting almost 9 GW of wind and solar power to the grid, according to the country's power sector regulator, Aneel.
Wind energy dominated the additions, contributing approximately 4.92 GW, constituting 47.65% of the total increase. Solar power made a noteworthy contribution of 4.07 GW, while new thermal power plants added a combined capacity of 1.21 GW.
Additionally, hydropower plants that commenced operations throughout the year contributed a combined 169.4 MW.
The data from Aneel for December 2023 indicates that Brazil connected a total of 1.9 GW of new power generating capacity to the grid. In that month, wind and solar power accounted for 956.7 MW and 374.8 MW, respectively.
As the year concluded, Brazil's total authorized power in operation reached 199.32 GW, with renewables comprising 83.67% of the overall capacity.
