Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS), the renowned Danish wind turbine manufacturer, concluded the year 2023 with a striking achievement of nearly 4 GW in orders from the United States. The surge was highlighted by a substantial 1,089-MW contract secured from Pattern Energy Group LP for the SunZia project, solidifying Vestas' position in the US wind energy sector.
In the waning days of the past year, Vestas announced a total of eight orders amounting to an impressive 3,933 MW of capacity. This robust performance in the US market accounted for over half of the company's total order intake in the final quarter, reaching a cumulative 6,945 MW.
Pattern Energy Group LP, as part of their USD 11 billion (EUR 9.96bn) financing for the SunZia Transmission and 3,515-MW SunZia Wind project, disclosed a significant deal with Vestas. The collaboration will see Vestas supplying 242 V163-4.5 MW turbines for the SunZia wind facility in New Mexico, marking Vestas' largest order in the US market and the largest single onshore project globally. Turbine delivery is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2025, with final commissioning anticipated in the first half of 2026.
Vestas emphasized that the 1.1 GW deal will primarily involve domestically sourced components, aligning with the company's recent investment of USD 40 million to produce the V163-4.5 MW turbine in the United States. The ongoing expansion of Vestas' two Colorado factories is nearing completion.
In addition to the SunZia project, Vestas revealed a 401-MW order from AES Corp for the West Camp wind project in Navajo County, Arizona. This agreement involves the supply of 89 V150-4.5 MW turbines, with deliveries set to commence in the fourth quarter of 2024, and commissioning planned for 2025.
The remaining order announcements included a 135-MW project developed by Steelhead Americas, Vestas' North American development arm. Additionally, Vestas disclosed a 945-MW order for 210 V163-4.5 MW turbines and a 603-MW contract for 134 units of the same turbine. Vestas' cutting-edge technology attracted a substantial 4.5 GW of orders in 2023, with a notable concentration in the final quarter.
