British energy services provider Petrofac and technology partner Hitachi Energy have secured their second offshore wind connection project as part of a multi-year framework agreement with Dutch-German transmission system operator TenneT. The contract pertains to the Nederwiek 1 transmission system in the Netherlands, a key component of TenneT's ambitious 2GW Program aimed at delivering multiple 2-GW offshore grid connection systems in the Dutch and German North Sea.
The overarching framework agreement, valued at approximately USD 14 billion (EUR 12.6bn) and encompassing six projects, was initially disclosed earlier this year alongside the announcement of the first project, Ijmuiden Ver Alpha.
Petrofac disclosed last week that its portion of the second contract is estimated at around USD 1.4 billion. In this venture, the company assumes responsibility for the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) of offshore platforms and certain components of onshore converter stations. Meanwhile, Hitachi Energy will contribute its expertise in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations for both offshore and onshore facilities.
John Pearson, Chief Operating, Energy Transition Projects at Petrofac, commented, “The award of Nederwiek 1 continues our focus on the standardisation and harmonisation of design and execution that will be central to the ‘design one, build many' philosophy of the 2GW Programme.”
The agreement outlines a schedule for further project awards at approximately six-month intervals. The additional projects covered include Nederwiek 3, landing at Geertruidenberg or Moerdijk, Doordewind 1 and Doordewind 2 at Eemshaven, and the German connection LanWin5 at Rastede. This collaboration underscores the commitment to advancing offshore wind infrastructure and aligns with the broader objectives of the energy transition towards sustainable sources.
