Norwegian power company Statkraft AS has recently sealed a ten-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Spain's prominent supermarket chain, Mercadona. The agreement stipulates that Statkraft will provide Mercadona with renewable energy sourced from its 1.8 gigawatts (GW) generation portfolio in the Iberian Peninsula, with Valencia-based energy firm Foener acting as Statkraft's marketing agent.
The contracted wind and solar power are set to be delivered by Statkraft starting from January 1, 2024, marking a significant step in fostering sustainable energy practices in Spain.
The PPA aligns with Mercadona's Energy Plan, a strategic initiative aimed at reducing energy consumption, curbing emissions, and minimizing operational energy costs. Statkraft Spain, the Spanish unit of the Norwegian state-owned utility, expressed that the collaboration supports Mercadona's commitment to environmentally conscious energy procurement.
This venture underscores the growing trend of major corporations seeking long-term agreements with renewable energy providers, marking a collective effort towards achieving sustainability goals and reducing carbon footprints in the corporate sector.
