Petrofac and Hitachi Energy have been awarded a contract for the Nederwiek 1 Dutch transmission station, a crucial component of TenneT's expansive 2GW Programme in the North Sea. The $1.4 billion contract is the second project within a multi-year framework agreement valued at $14 billion, aiming to expand offshore wind capacity in the region.
Nederwiek 1 encompasses multiple high-voltage direct current (HVDC) offshore grid connection systems, each boasting a transmission capacity of 2GW. Petrofac's role involves the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) of offshore platforms and elements of the onshore converter stations, while Hitachi Energy will supply HVDC converter stations facilitating the conversion of AC to DC power offshore and DC to AC onshore.

Collaborating closely on preparatory works and initiating the detailed design process for the first platform, Ijmuiden Ver Alpha, Petrofac and Hitachi Energy aim to streamline the execution of the broader 2GW Programme. Petrofac has already secured the performance guarantee for the Ijmuiden Ver Alpha contract and is actively engaged with credit providers and clients to secure guarantees for additional contracts in its portfolio.
The 2GW Programme involves standardization and harmonization of design and execution, aligning with the ‘design one, build many' philosophy. The Nederwiek 1 award reinforces the strategic partnership's commitment to supporting TenneT's objectives and contributing to the rapid deployment of large-scale infrastructure crucial for Europe's energy transition.
