Compagnie de Saint-Gobain SA, the French building materials manufacturer, has inked a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the South African unit of French renewable energy producer Cap Vert Energie (CVE).
The deal will provide 140 GWh of solar electricity to cover approximately 40% of the electricity needs for Saint-Gobain's major gypsum and mortars production sites in South Africa.
The four production plants, situated in Brakpan, Alrode, and Germiston in the Gauteng region, as well as in Parrow, Western Cape, are expected to eliminate over 6,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
Othman Benjelloun-Touimi, CEO of Saint-Gobain in Africa, highlighted that this renewable energy project represents a significant step toward meeting the company's commitment to reducing scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 33% by 2030, compared to 2017, with the ultimate goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
