Electrofuel plants developer Liquid Wind, along with NordFuel's owner Kanteleen Voima and Piipsan Tuulivoima, a unit of wind power specialist Puhuri Oy, have signed a letter of intent (LoI) to collaborate on the establishment of a wind-powered eMethanol plant in Haapavesi, Finland. The three partners will jointly undertake the responsibility for project development, with a focus on decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries such as shipping.
The planned facility will be situated adjacent to NordFuel's biorefinery project in Haapavesi and will be powered by a new onshore wind park developed and operated by Piipsan Tuulivoima. Both the biorefinery and the wind power site will undergo parallel development.
Liquid Wind's CEO Claes Fredriksson expressed excitement about the project, highlighting its potential to contribute to a world less dependent on fossil fuels. The eMethanol produced in Haapavesi aims to address challenges in decarbonizing industries with high emissions, particularly in the shipping sector.
This partnership follows Liquid Wind's recent announcement of an intensified collaboration with decarbonization specialists, with plans to develop and market 10 additional eMethanol facilities in the Nordics by 2027.
