German energy company AG announced on Thursday that its trading arm has secured a deal to supply approximately 160 GWh of power to national railway operator AG.

MVV Trading, the trading arm of MVV Energie, inked a (PPA) with Deutsche Bahn's energy subsidiary, DB Energie GmbH. The solar power will be generated from three recently commissioned photovoltaic parks developed by MVV's project developer, Juwi. These parks, located in Bremelau and Heudorf in Baden-Wuerttemberg, as well as Roeckingen in , boast a combined capacity of 36.5 MWp.

Under the terms of the agreement, MVV Trading will deliver around 40 GWh of solar power annually for a four-year period, commencing from January 1, 2024.

In August, Deutsche Bahn secured the supply of approximately 175 million kWh of wind power from German wind farm operator Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum GmbH & Co KG (TWB). Additionally, the railway company plans to source 20 MW of power from the He Dreiht wind farm project, slated for construction in the North Sea off the German coast.

This initiative aligns with Deutsche Bahn's overarching strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2040, with a specific target to exclusively utilize renewable energy from 2038, as outlined in a statement in August. The collaboration with MVV Energie underscores the railway company's commitment to advancing sustainable energy practices in its operations.
