Norwegian renewable power producer Scatec ASA has officially activated one of the world's largest hybrid solar and battery projects in South Africa, combining 540 MW of solar capacity with 225 MW/1,140 MWh of battery storage capacity.
Known as the Kenhardt project, this massive initiative comprises three plants located in South Africa's Northern Cape Province. Operating under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Eskom, the project will deliver 150 MW of dispatchable power to the grid daily, spanning from 0500 to 2130 local time.
The USD 1 billion (EUR 928 million) Kenhardt project achieved financial close and commenced construction in July 2022. Scatec holds a 51% equity stake, while its local Black Economic Empowerment partner, H1 Holdings, owns the remaining 49%.
Scatec's Chief Executive, Terje Pilskog, emphasized the project's significance, stating, “This is more than just a power plant; it's a testament to the limitless potential of integrating solar and battery storage to meet the evolving energy needs of today and tomorrow.”
The expansive complex encompasses nearly 1 million photovoltaic (PV) modules and 456 battery units, solidifying Scatec's position in advancing large-scale renewable energy projects globally.
