The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has unveiled the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for Orsted's ambitious 924MW Sunrise offshore wind project in the United States.
The project, presented by Sunrise Wind LLC, outlines plans for up to 94 wind turbines and associated export cables. The onshore components, including export cables, substation, and grid connection, are designated for Holbrook, New York.
In response to feedback from government partners, key stakeholders, and the public, BOEM has fine-tuned the project's details, presenting a preferred alternative in the FEIS. The revised plan reduces the number of turbines to 84, addressing geotechnical feasibility concerns, minimizing impacts on benthic habitat and Atlantic cod, and still meeting the energy needs of New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
The FEIS meticulously analyzes the potential environmental impacts associated with the construction and operations plan proposed by Sunrise Wind. It reflects a comprehensive assessment of the project's potential effects on the environment.
BOEM Director Elizabeth Klein emphasized the agency's commitment to thorough consideration of stakeholder input, stating, “We carefully considered input from our government partners, key stakeholders, and the public for the Final Environmental Impact Statement for Sunrise Wind. This document represents a thorough and comprehensive analysis of the potential environmental impacts of the project and is another milestone in achieving President Biden's ambitious clean-energy goals.”
The next steps involve BOEM issuing a Record of Decision early next year, determining whether to approve the Sunrise Wind project and, if approved, specifying any conditions attached to the approval. This development marks a significant stride in advancing the Biden administration's goals in promoting clean and sustainable energy initiatives.
