Orsted and Glennmont Partners have initiated the installation process for the Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm, a monumental project with a capacity of 913MW located 70km off the German North Sea coast. The commencement of installation marks a significant milestone for the partners, especially following Glennmont's acquisition of a 50% stake from Orsted in early 2022.
During the construction phase, the project will witness the installation of 83 monopile foundations by the Jan De Nul Group, each foundation measuring up to 100m in length and weighing up to 1500 tonnes. These foundations will serve as the support for the state-of-the-art SG 11.0-200 DD offshore wind turbines, boasting 11MW capacities and impressive rotor diameters of 200m. Once operational in 2025, Borkum Riffgrund 3 is poised to be Germany's largest wind farm in terms of export capacity.
Joost Bergsma, CEO and Managing Partner at Glennmont Partners, expressed enthusiasm for the project's commencement, emphasizing its strategic importance in contributing over 900MW of reliable, clean, and cost-effective energy. The collaboration between Glennmont and Orsted on Borkum Riffgrund 3 aligns with Europe's decarbonization and energy security goals, making it a pivotal venture in North Sea renewables.
Bergsma underscored the success of the partnership with Orsted and the project's attractiveness to investors, highlighting its role in advancing Europe's renewable energy ambitions. The ongoing progress of Borkum Riffgrund 3 signifies a joint commitment to driving sustainable energy solutions and achieving key milestones in the offshore wind sector.
