The offshore wind industry in Poland is poised to take giant strides in the coming years, thanks to a groundbreaking deal between Siemens Gamesa and developers PGE Baltica and Ørsted. The deal involves the supply of 107 14-MW wind turbines for the Baltica 2 offshore wind project located in the Baltic Sea, around 40 km from the northern coast of Poland between Łeba and Ustka.
Apart from the supply of turbines, the agreement also includes a five-year maintenance contract to ensure optimal turbine performance. The project is set to come online in 2027, and once operational, will avoid over 5.4 million tons of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to the emissions from approximately 3.6 million diesel cars. Furthermore, it will provide electricity to around 2.4 million homes in Poland, helping strengthen the energy security of the country's economy.
The Baltica 2 project is currently the largest offshore project announced in Poland and marks Siemens Gamesa's entry into the Polish offshore wind market. Siemens Gamesa also has three other preferred supplier agreements for a total of 1.79 GW, representing around a sixth of Poland's offshore wind target.
According to Marc Becker, CEO of the offshore business in Siemens Gamesa, “This latest deal for Baltica 2 will cement the foundations for a successful rollout of offshore wind power in Poland. The Baltic Sea can provide huge opportunities for the growth of the industry in coming years, and we stand committed with Poland and our partners to develop it further.”
Wojciech Dąbrowski, President of the Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, stated that “The signed contract relates to delivery of turbines for Baltica 2 with capacity of about 1.5 GW, which is the biggest offshore wind investment developed in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea and one of the largest of its kind in the world. The PGE Group is responsible for ensuring Poland's energy security. We consistently implement the strategy of creating new, green sources of electricity for our country. By 2030, we aim to build about 2.5 GW of generation capacity in the Baltic Sea.”

This project will also strengthen Siemens Gamesa's growing presence in the country and along the Baltic coast, as the company has established a hub in Gdansk to oversee the development of operations in the Baltic Sea. Poland has set a target of awarding 10.9 GW in offshore wind capacity by 2030, with the first installations expected to begin in 2026. The second set of auctions is due to start in 2025, with installations closer to the end of the decade.
The Baltica 2 project will undoubtedly set the stage for further growth in the offshore wind sector in Poland, reinforcing the country's commitment to clean and sustainable energy sources while simultaneously enhancing energy security.
