, a global independent power producer, has commenced the construction of a 300MW solar portfolio consisting of five projects in the United Kingdom. Acquired by Sonnedix in December 2022, the portfolio is slated for completion in early 2025.

The entirety of the portfolio is contracted under the government's (CfD) scheme, specifically allocation rounds AR4 and AR5. The CfD scheme offers a guaranteed electricity price through 15-year contracts with the Low Carbon Contracts Company.

The five ground-mounted solar plants are spread across England and include the Cowley Complex in County Durham, Gonerby Solar in Lincolnshire, Winkburn Solar Farm in Nottinghamshire, Gammaton Solar in North Devon, and Lawns Solar in Lancashire. The projects vary in size from 120MW to 20MW and are being constructed by Sunel Energy.

Sonnedix aims to expand its renewable energy presence in the UK, with the construction phase expected to create approximately 270 jobs. Axel Thiemann, CEO of Sonnedix, highlighted the significance of solar projects in the UK's transition to renewable energies, noting that over half of the total capacity awarded in the recent CfD round was allocated to solar projects.

Thiemann stated, “We are proud to be a part of this transition. Today's news is a vital step in the continuing growth of Sonnedix's UK capacity. This will be a significant contributor of clean electricity, helping the UK meet its decarbonization and energy security goals. We're excited to be moving ahead with construction and progressing our position as a key player here.”
