ACWA Power has unveiled plans to develop Indonesia's largest green hydrogen facility in collaboration with PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the state-owned electricity provider, and PT Pupuk Indonesia, a state-owned chemical and fertilizer producer. The Garuda Hidrogen Hijau (GH2) Project, slated to commence commercial operations in 2026, will harness 600MW of solar and wind power, aiming to produce an annual output of 150,000 tonnes of green ammonia.
With an estimated cost exceeding US$1 billion, the project signifies a substantial investment in the green hydrogen sector. Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power, formalized the agreement alongside Darmawan Prasodjo, CEO of PLN, and Rahmad Pribadi, CEO of Pupuk Indonesia Holding Company.
The forthcoming engineering procurement and construction (EPC) bidding process for the Garuda Hidrogen Hijau project is anticipated to kick off in the first quarter of 2024. Financial closure is earmarked for the conclusion of 2025, underlining the project's strategic timeline.
This endeavor adds to ACWA Power's expanding green hydrogen portfolio, aligning with global sustainability goals. Concurrently, progress is underway at the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia, a massive 1.2 million tonne-per-year initiative expected to conclude by late 2026. Additionally, ACWA Power initiated construction on a second green hydrogen project in Uzbekistan in November 2023, reinforcing the company's commitment to advancing clean energy solutions on a global scale.
