GenusPlus Group has secured a significant contract to undertake civil and electrical balance of plant (BOP) responsibilities for Synergy's Kwinana Battery Stage Two (KBESS2) project in Western Australia, a 200-MW/800-MWh utility-scale initiative. The contract, valued at AUD 90 million (USD 59.7m/EUR 54.3m), encompasses crucial activities such as the installation and commissioning of nearly 300 battery container units and 72 inverters.
In a recent LinkedIn post, GenusPlus announced its role in handling the comprehensive BOP aspects associated with the energy storage venture. The KBESS2 project aims to leverage 300 EnerC Plus battery units from China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), a decision formalized in September. Situated in Kwinana, the second grid-scale energy storage system in Western Australia is anticipated to play a pivotal role in augmenting grid resilience by discharging electricity during peak demand periods.
Commencing onsite activities in July, the Kwinana Battery Stage Two project is slated for operational readiness by late 2024. This expansion follows the successful commissioning of the Kwinana Big Battery, a 100-MW/200-MWh facility inaugurated in May at the location of a former gas-fired power station.
The KBESS2 project marks a strategic move toward bolstering Western Australia's energy storage infrastructure, contributing to the region's commitment to meeting energy demands efficiently. The development aligns with broader industry trends and underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance grid reliability and sustainability.
