The government of Brazil's Ceara state has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Grupo Jepri for the development of a substantial green hydrogen project in the northeastern region. Grupo Jepri is set to invest EUR 3.3 billion (USD 3.6 billion) in the project, as announced by the local government on Saturday.
The envisaged green hydrogen facility, situated in Ceara's Pecem Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP), aims to produce approximately 1.2 million tonnes of clean fuel annually. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2025, with hydrogen generation expected to start in the last quarter of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027, according to statements from Jepri's CEO, Cesar Ruiz Munoz.
This initiative marks the 35th MoU signed by the Ceara government with a private company focused on green hydrogen production in the state. Additionally, four pre-contracts with companies have been inked. The collective investments in Ceara are projected to reach USD 17.9 billion (EUR 16.4 billion) by 2030, with the overarching goal of generating 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually and producing 6 GW of energy, as outlined by the state government.
