Jordan is positioning itself as a key player in the green energy landscape with the development of a roadmap for green hydrogen, utilizing its natural gas infrastructure and renewable energy resources. Energy Minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh announced the strategic move last week, emphasizing the country's ambition to become a regional hub for green energy.
The roadmap will pave the way for a comprehensive strategy that will detail opportunities, applications, and the legal framework and regulations governing the production, use, and export of green hydrogen. Al-Kharabsheh shared these insights at a conference in Istanbul, underlining Jordan's commitment to a sustainable energy future.
The Jordanian government, in collaboration with international investors and developers, is actively working to identify infrastructure crucial for large-scale green hydrogen projects. This strategic approach aims to enhance the attractiveness and cost competitiveness of such initiatives, aligning with the growing global interest in green hydrogen and ammonia production.
Al-Kharabsheh highlighted the significance of the Jordanian Gas Transmission Pipeline (JGTP) as a strategic component of the country's energy infrastructure. With its strategic location, the JGTP is poised to facilitate the export of substantial quantities of natural gas or green hydrogen.
Jordan has emerged as a key player in the growing green hydrogen market in the region, evident in the signing of multiple memoranda of understanding in recent months. These agreements, focused on feasibility studies for the development of up to 1.5 million tonnes of green ammonia production capacity, underscore Jordan's commitment to contributing significantly to the green energy landscape.
As the Kingdom prepares to participate in the COP 28 summit in Dubai at the end of the month, Al-Kharabsheh anticipates the signing of five additional pacts, further solidifying Jordan's role in the regional green hydrogen market.
