Axpo Unveils Plans for 10 MW Alpine Solar Plant in Switzerland

Swiss power producer and energy trader Holding AG has announced its intention to construct a 10-MWp alpine plant in the municipality of Glarus Sued, marking its sixth such project in . This initiative is part of Axpo's broader “solar offensive,” with the aim of reaching a solar power capacity exceeding 1.2 GW by 2030 through strategic installations in residential areas and the Swiss Alps.

The proposed 10-MWp solar farm will be situated in the same municipality as Axpo's operational 2.2-MWp alpine solar plant, which commenced operations in August 2022. The new array, located at an elevation of around 1,500 meters (4,921 ft) above sea level, will cover an area of approximately 120,000 square meters (1.3m sq ft). It is slated to feature around 36,000 solar panels, standing three meters above the ground with an inclination of up to 70 degrees.

Upon completion, the alpine plant is expected to generate approximately 13 GWh of annually, contributing to Axpo's commitment to expanding its portfolio. The “solar offensive” initiative underscores the company's strategic focus on leveraging solar power capacity, with a specific emphasis on installations both in residential areas and the unique alpine terrain.

Axpo's proactive approach to increasing its solar footprint aligns with broader industry trends and the push towards sustainable energy solutions. The expansion into alpine solar projects not only demonstrates technological innovation but also signifies the company's dedication to harnessing diverse geographical landscapes for clean energy generation.
