Ramboll and Wien Energie have announced the establishment of a strategic joint venture, named Venergi, with the aim of spearheading efforts to decarbonize Vienna's energy supplies. Wien Energie, a prominent regional utility, is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040, and Venergi will play a pivotal role in supporting this ambitious goal.
The joint venture will see Ramboll, a global engineering and consultancy firm, providing planning, engineering, and consulting services to Wien Energie. The utility's decarbonization strategy involves the development of new renewable energy plants and the modernization or conversion of existing facilities.
Michael Strebl, CEO of Wien Energie, emphasized the urgency of their mission, stating, “As Austria's largest regional utility company, Wien Energie has a clear goal: climate neutrality in 2040. We are working on this at full speed to be able to supply our customers entirely with renewable energy.”
Venergi's scope of work will encompass planning, designing, and project management of initiatives focused on renewable energy and green technologies. Hannes Reuter, Managing Director of Ramboll's global energy business unit, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “The joint venture with Wien Energie is a perfect match with our strategy to drive sustainable change through trusted strong partnerships and become a leader in the green energy transition.”
The joint venture will be led by a commercial managing director and a technical managing director, both sharing responsibilities for the company's operations. Over the next two years, Venergi aims to expand its team to include over 50 experts specializing in energy transition services.
Strebl highlighted the importance of international expertise in realizing Wien Energie's investment program, stating, “Having Ramboll as our joint venture partner will allow us to tap into international know-how and best practice on carbon capture, green hydrogen, and other green technologies.”
Vienna, renowned as the world's most liveable city according to the Global Liveability Index 2023 by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), is set to benefit from this collaborative effort to accelerate its transition toward sustainable and carbon-neutral energy sources.
