Energinet, the Danish power and gas grid operator, and Gasunie, the German subsidiary of the Dutch gas grid operator, have formalized a cooperation agreement to jointly develop the Danish-German hydrogen network.
The collaboration focuses on coordinating efforts for the Danish Backbone West project in Denmark and the Hyperlink 3 project in Germany, both integral parts of the envisioned European Hydrogen Backbone.
The key objective of this partnership is to establish a cross-border transmission connection, facilitating the transportation of green hydrogen produced in Denmark to the German market starting in 2028. The proposed network is slated to span approximately 550 kilometers (342 miles), extending from the hydrogen underground storage facility in Lille Torup, northern Denmark, to Heidenau, situated south of Hamburg.
Commenting on the collaboration, Gasunie Deutschland Managing Director Britta van Boven emphasized the creation of a robust hydrogen import pathway, connecting anticipated demand and supply for this environmentally friendly energy source. The strategic alignment of Danish Backbone West and Hyperlink underscores the commitment to a seamless and integrated European hydrogen infrastructure.
As the global energy landscape undergoes a shift towards sustainable alternatives, the Energinet-Gasunie collaboration stands as a noteworthy step in fostering cross-border cooperation to advance the adoption of green hydrogen solutions.
