CWP Global Advances Plans for 30GW Green Hydrogen Project in Mauritania

Renewables developer CWP Global is making significant strides in its proposed 30-gigawatt (GW) green project in Mauritania, with advanced technical and environmental studies, according to Chief Commercial Officer Ramy Lotfy.

The company has amassed over 18 months of wind data, identified potential off-takers, and progressed environmental assessments. The USD 40 billion AMAN project, a collaboration between CWP and the Mauritanian government, aims to boost the country's GDP by 40% to 50% by 2030, as per a study conducted at the project's inception in May 2022.

The AMAN site, set to be situated in the Dakhlet Nouadhibou and Inchiri regions, will feature 18 GW of wind capacity and 12 GW of solar capacity. At full capacity, the facility is anticipated to generate approximately 110 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity, producing 1.7 million tonnes of or 10 million tonnes of green annually for both local consumption and export.

Mauritania is emerging as a hub for green hydrogen projects, with several initiatives underway. Earlier this year, Infinity Power Holding and German project developer Conjuncta GmbH signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a green hydrogen plant with a targeted capacity of up to 10 GW.

Additionally, Total Eren from and Chariot Ltd, an Africa-focused energy firm, are collaborating on the potential 10 GW Project Nour. The growing pipeline of green hydrogen projects in Mauritania underscores the country's commitment to development and the potential economic benefits associated with such initiatives.
